The Majority Matters When It Comes to Earmarks

Relevance Score: 1.982    2014-01-15 14:35:14

Ending Spending and its community of supporters and activists worked hard in 2010 to convince Congress finally to abandon the wasteful practice of earmarking. When Republicans took control of the House in 2011, they promised to rein in out-of-control federal spending and change the way Congress spends taxpayer money. One important step in that process was banning earmarks.

Oh, Look! The President's Jobs Bill Does Exist!

Relevance Score: 1.820    2011-10-03 09:45:13

Last week, I chronicled my search for President Obama's jobs bill. It took me more than two weeks, but I managed to track it down, finally, as a real and introduced bill on which Congress could take action. Except they couldn't. The problem last week was that the Government Printing ...

To Balance the Budget -- Does America Want an Amendment??

Relevance Score: 1.814    2011-08-29 14:50:40

We all know that the federal budget is out of control We know that the debt, which has reached a number far too large for most of us to easily comprehend, can not continue to rise without catastrophic results. We know that our government can not continue to operate as ...

Ending Spending Supports House Bill To Let Americans Keep Their Healthcare Plan

Relevance Score: 1.672    2013-11-14 17:22:23

Ending Spending has signed on with other conservative and free market groups to support H.R. 3350, introduced in the House by Energy & Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton and over two dozen Republicans. The bill would allow Americans to keep their health care plans if they like them – fulfilling President Obama’s “promise” made time and time again.

Did You Know: The first earmark ever requested was vetoed.

Relevance Score: 1.644    2011-01-03 11:39:42

That's right. The first earmark ever requested was vetoed by President James Madison, who called the spending unconstitutional. Jim Cox writes: "The first known Member of Congress to write a bill specifically requesting an appropriation of funds for a specific project was Congressman John C. Calhoun of South Carolina (7th Vice President of the United States) who requested funds in 1817 under the Bonus Bill for 'internal improvements.'"

Bipartisanship: A Four-Letter Word?

Relevance Score: 1.611    2013-12-11 16:46:01

"The 'Bipartisan Budget Act' reminds us why bipartisanship is sometimes a four-letter word. Bipartisanship in DC usually just means that the size of government is growing, and that appears to be true with this compromise as well. We would have preferred that the full amount of the sequester cuts had remained intact. But what do fiscal conservatives expect? Does anyone actually believe a bill negotiated by Paul Ryan and Jeff Sessions wouldn't be infinitely better than a Patty Murray-Paul Ryan bill? The way to fix that is simple -- we must put fiscal conservatives in charge of the Senate -- and the way to do that is obvious. First, stop attacking Senators who favor cutting spending, balancing the budget and repealing Obamacare. Second, go on the offense and take the battle to those Democratic Senators who consistently vote for higher taxes, more spending, and bigger government."

Stop them Before They Spend Again

Relevance Score: 1.605    2012-08-15 14:37:26

One of the central arguments against big government is that a few of us is not smarter than all of us. That is, a relatively small number of bureaucrats in Washington can not make decisions for us, can not manage our economy, can not create jobs, can not ensure our ...

Hallelujah, I Have Found The President's Jobs Bill, Sort Of!

Relevance Score: 1.575    2011-09-26 09:10:42

Ever since President Obama stood before Congress on September 8 and demanded that it pass his non-existent jobs bill that very minute I have been on the search for the bill. Like any responsible citizen, I wanted to read it for myself, rather than rely on anyone else's word on ...

Spending Bills—The Bad and the Really Bad

Relevance Score: 1.564    2011-08-21 16:23:01

It looks like people don’t like spending. Not one of the spending bills for fiscal year 2012 enjoys the support of a majority of WashingtonWatch.com voters.
